I mentioned in an earlier post that I'm very curious about the new Trail of Cthluhu RPG. It's mixing the old CoC feel with a new system and perspective, and I see nothing wrong with that. But after my interest grew, I began to take a closer look at the other stuff being put out by Pelgrane Press Ltd, and I like what I see.
Some might think The Esoterrorists is just another modern conspiracy X-Files ripoff, but you know, I think it's a little more than that, and I'm willing to dig in and check this game out. I've run some horror scenarios before, and while it all depends on the group you've got and the "feel" of both the game and the session, under the right circumstances you can pull off some really satisfying freak-outs. I also dig the whole "modern occult / horror" aspect of it, especially living in Boston, a city that's perfect as the setting for that kind of gaming.
Another horror game of Pelgrane's, and one that is, at least in my mind, a lot more disturbing, is the Fear Itself RPG. To quote their website, it "plunges ordinary people into a disturbing contemporary world of madness and violence.", letting you put your PCs in the roles of your typical horror movie protagonist / victim. The idea of running this game weirds me out a lot, because I'm not really into the whole "torture porn" thing - two hours of watching a movie that's nothing but people getting tortured to death is not my idea of a fun time.
One of these days I'll have to pick up Esoterrorists, and give it a go. Grab it and read it this summer, and then once October rolls around...
